|Community creek day slated for December 8
The Sonoma County Water Agency and the Sonoma County Youth Ecology Corps (SCYEC) have scheduled four community creek days this winter,
The first is Saturday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m.-noon. at Washoe Creek in west Cotati. Participants will clean up trash, plant shade-bearing plants, learn about their watershed, and earn community service hours. This is an opportunity for youth to volunteer in the community and make new friends. The event will take place in light rain; heavy rain cancels (if in doubt, call 547-1930 for a recorded message).
“These community service days are a great way to improve our creeks and flood control channels while giving young people an opportunity to earn community service hours,” said Water Agency Director David Rabbitt.
This summer, crews working in the eight-week SCYEC program cleared invasive vegetation and selectively trimmed willows and other plants from 12 miles of creek channels. They removed 1,442 cubic yards of debris and 1,642 pounds of garbage.
Those who participate should park at the Marin-Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District office parking lot at 595 Helman Lane in Cotati.
