A Penngrove couple pleaded not guilty to felony child abuse charges on June 8.

Lyndsay Patricia Colula, 20, and Jesus Daniel Colula, 26, were arrested on June 5 after health care providers discovered their 3-month-old daughter suffered from multiple broken bones in her body.

The couple had taken their daughter to a local clinic for a checkup. Child Protective Services was then called, and the baby was taken to Oakland Children’s Hospital for examination.

The examination revealed the baby had one limb completely broken and several smaller fractures. She also had bruises and a contusion.

According to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s domestic violence unit, the injuries were at least one week old and the couple did not seek medical attention for their daughter’s injuries.

Prosecutor Rosanne Darling told the Press Democrat the infant may have been hurt as early as May 18 and the injuries did not appear to be the result of an accident, saying, “The injuries to the infant were extreme.”

They are charged with felony child endangerment causing great bodily injury and inflicting cruel and inhuman corporal punishment on a child, Darling said.

They entered their pleas after receiving lawyers appointed by the court.

Judge Robert LaForge increased bail on each to $65,000 and set a preliminary hearing for June 18. Jesus Colula faced a federal immigration hold.
